A Hilltop Neighborhood with Deep Roots

Mount Auburn was platted as a town in 1837, after being known earlier as Keys’ Hill for one of its first settlers. It took its current name from Mount Auburn Cemetery in Boston and was annexed into the City of Cincinnati in 1849.

In its early decades, Mount Auburn developed as a hilltop retreat above the basin below. Auburn Avenue, its main thoroughfare, was laid out with tree-lined sidewalks and gas lighting, and was known in that era as one of the city’s most prominent residential streets.

The Housing Landscape

The Mount Auburn Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, includes homes built from 1819 into the early twentieth century. Architectural styles range from Federal and Greek Revival to Italian Villa, Romanesque Revival, and Georgian Revival, often standing side by side on the same block.

Lot sizes and house forms vary street to street — some blocks hold detached houses with hillside views toward downtown, others carry rowhouse-style construction closer to Auburn Avenue. Many buyers are drawn to the architectural detail original to each build era.

Buying and Selling Here

Homes in a historic district raise their own questions — what exterior changes are allowed and how a house’s age affects inspection findings. Ela walks buyers through those conversations directly rather than leaving them to figure it out after an offer is written.

Selling an older home means telling its story accurately. Ela’s MBA in Finance and Marketing from the University of Cincinnati and her Seller Representative Specialist (SRS) designation shape how she prices a listing from the start.
